Choose the Right Automotive Molding Route
Production, transfer, secondary sourcing, new tooling, DFM, insert/assembly, and export molds solve different problems. Choose the route from the project condition and required approval—not from a generic list of manufacturing capabilities.
Priority Routes for Parts Supply
These routes are closest to long-term automotive plastic-parts production.
Repeat parts production
Approved or maturing mold, recurring demand, material/process/inspection/packaging controls.
Transfer or recover an existing mold
Custody, incoming condition, press compatibility, baseline trial, repairs, and requalification.
Create a qualified second source
Authorized source baseline, measurable equivalence, repeat tool/process, comparison, and release.
Engineering and Tooling Routes
Use these when a production barrier, new tool, special process, or overseas plant must be addressed.
Build a new production mold
Released part data, approved mold specification, design/build/T1/correction/handoff.
Resolve risk before steel
Part, gate, ejection, appearance, dimensional, and flow/warpage decisions before tool design.
Integrate inserts, materials, or assembly
Incoming-component control, loading protection, functional interfaces, work instructions, and testing.
Build a mold for another plant
Destination press and standards, China trials, documents, spares, preservation, and shipment.
What the First Review Should Establish
- Which route applies now and which later stage may follow.
- Who owns the product design, tooling, technical data, and approval decisions.
- The current CAD/drawing/mold/sample/material baseline and known gaps.
- Part environment, annual or service demand, timing, plant destination, and commercial boundary.
- The evidence required to approve DFM, tool design, samples, production, transfer, second source, or shipment.
If inputs are incomplete, the quotation should state assumptions and the next information gate instead of presenting an unsupported fixed outcome.
